Ashok Sharma, a bell attendant at Crown Promenade, is about to make some decisions so big they will shape the rest of his life.
He and his wife are preparing to buy a house – and start a family.
But there’s one big worry that hangs over them. Can they afford it on his current wages?
“We are looking for a house right now. So we’ll have a mortgage to pay,” explains Ashok.
“We want to start a family. And I want my children to have all the opportunities they deserve.”
“But everything is going up. And the bills will be coming in faster than the money is.”
Ashok is no doubt that Crown staff deserve world class pay and conditions.
“We are world class staff. We provide the highest standard of customer service.”
“Everyone deserves a pay increase. We are multi-skilled. We do multiple tasks. But we don’t get paid for higher duties.”
Ashok is also in no doubt that Crown can afford to pay its staff world class pay and conditions.
“If Crown can afford all these new casino developments then they can afford to pay us properly.”
“They have all this money to invest because of our hard work at Crown Melbourne.”
But Ashok knows that Crown didn’t get this profitable by being generous.
“Crown will be happy to keep paying us the same rate of pay. If we want world class pay and conditions we are going to have to fight for it.”
“If we’re united we will have more strength and we can really make a difference.”
“I am already promoting union membership to people in my area. We’ve gone from 50 to 70 per cent union membership. And hopefully we’ll go to 90 per cent in the coming months.”
“You’ve got to fight for your rights.”
