Crown Census: Staff have our say

CrownCensusPoster-2_web.jpgOur Union Census saw over 1,400 Crown employees participate in one of the biggest surveys of Crown staff ever conducted.

Overwhelmingly, the most important issue identified by Census participants was “I wish I was paid more for the work I do”. However the census also showed that a large number of people cared about a range of key issues affecting their working lives including career progression, training and development, health issues like smoking, and getting respect from management and patrons.

What was the Census?

The Census was the biggest Union survey ever conducted for Crown staff. The Census reached out to all areas of Crown to get a better understanding of the views of Crown employees ahead of next year’s EA negotiations.

Who did the Census?CrownCensusPoster-1a.jpg

Crown staff from all departments pulled together with over 1,400 employees taking part in the Census. This amazing result is a real show of the unity and strength of all staff at Crown.

What did the Census ask?

The Census asked Crown staff a range of questions what it’s like to work at Crown. The Census asked about what people liked and disliked about their work, and also about what they would most like to change about working conditions at Crown

What will happen with the Census results?

The Census is the first step in collecting Crown staff’s views on the major issues that need to be addressed in negotiating our new EA in 2013. Throughout December and January Union members will be meeting in workshops to discuss how the key issues will be addressed next year.

Results by department

While most Crown staff said getting more money for the high class work we do was most important, some of the results changed for different departments. Here’s an extract of the top four issues by Department, and a selection of some comments.

Top 4 issues for Tables Games

  1. More pay
  2. Better career progression
  3. Better training
  4. Opposed to smoking

Comments from Table games staff

“Respect, respect, respect. And give us what is deserved. It is a multimillion dollar company and without the efforts of the employees, Crown wouldn’t be where it is today.”

“Crown should offer three games to more dealers. Crown needs to reward dealers for their work more. They expect us to work extra hard and don’t thank us for it”.

“Employer should value the skill and qualification of employees and give them equal opportunity to develop their future”

“I don’t like the concept that if you chose to be a non-smoking coded dealer then you will not be considered for third game training, or any other promotion opportunity”.

Top 4 issues for Security

  1. More pay
  2. Better work/life balance
  3. Respect at work
  4. Better training

Comments from security staff

“I like the challenging environment as we are always learning new things at crown, I dont like management way of handling rosters and work performances”

“More hours of work, but crown is not rostering too many guards which is making one guard do all the work. Unsafe work environment, for you, patrons and workmates.”

“There are a lot of staff who work on the floor who have seen many changes and might also have great ideas but are quickly dismissed by new managers as trouble maker, when all they do is suggest ideas.”

Top 4 issues for Food & Beverage

  1. More pay
  2. Concerns about job security
  3. Better career progression
  4. Respect at work

Comments from food and beverage staff

“Certain management need to help out staff more instead of just telling them what to do when they can do simple things that are easy themselves”

“Crown is a good place to work. That’s what I tell to all my friends. But Crown really needs to train staff because it is a five star establishment.”

“Managers should not be able to bully / scream at other employees. And we should be able to take them to HR …”

Top 4 issues for Hotels & other areas

  1. More pay
  2. Concerns about job security
  3. Better career progression
  4. Respect at work

Comments from Hotels staff

“I feel insecure in my job because other house-keeping services have been contracted out.”

“I have been trying to get cross-training in other departments but I am not going anywhere. It feels like I am stuck at my job and can’t progress my career.”

“I would like more job security and to be made a full time member of staff. I have been at Crown for 6 ½ years.”

Comments from gaming machines attendants and finance staff

“GM attendants work 10 hours, get paid 9.5 hours and only get 1 food allowance when some shifts we walk up to 20 km !!”

“Our staff are under utilized and constantly observed by our managers. We feel like we are in School. Most managers do not trust us or treat us with respect. We are always being watched and do not have much to do but walk round pushing in chairs.”

"Consulting committees are not working as they should. Quite often decisions are already made by management and no amount of consultation changes their mind.”
