Getting a better balance at Crown

Dave Francis, DealerPretty much everyone who works at Crown has got at least one heart-breaking story about having to miss something important in their lives because inflexible rostering.

“People have missed births, deaths, marriages. You name it. Everything you can think of,” dealer and union delegate Dave Francis explains.

For Dave, it was missing a close friend’s wedding.

“Two years ago, a close friend of mine was married and I couldn’t go. Crown has a policy of giving seven weeks’ notice and only I gave four. It was during a peak time.”

And, as Dave found out, the damage from missing these key events isn’t always easily undone.

“We’re not really friends anymore,” he says.

That’s why he nominates winning a better work-life balance as his most of important part of our five-point plan to win world class working conditions in our new EA.

This plan came out of our Crown Census, held late last year with over 1400 Crown staff. It was one of the largest surveys of Crown staff ever conducted.

The five-point plan was also strongly endorsed at mass meetings last week.

Dave says he’d like to see greater flexibility and fairness when it comes to changing rosters.

“It has got better, but it’s still not good enough. You need ask the right person at the right time. There’s a lot of favouritism.”

“As a full-timer, I can’t give away shifts to a part-timer.”

He thinks it’s only fair that Crown helps improves the work-life balance of its staff.

“We make big sacrifices for Crown. We deserve some recognition for that.”

He also thinks there would be real benefits to Crown from more flexible rostering.

“With better work-life balance more people will stay. We will feel more respected as employees. We would feel greater pride about where we work,” he says.

But Dave knows that things will only change at Crown if all staff come together this year.

“Numbers is power at Crown. That what Crown listens to.”

“I encourage people to join our union. This is the only way we’ll make change. One voice doesn’t work, but with a united voice we can make a difference.”
